The Snow Katsina, or Nuvak’chin, brings the cold and snow to the Hopi, so that moisture from the snowpack in the mountains comes down to water the crops in the Spring. As a water bringer he’s close with Avanyu the Water Serpent. During the Bean Dance, Nuvak’chin gives gifts to the people during the dances.

This pleasant doll is cheerily painted in red, white, yellow and black, with a feather and red, green, and gold yarn atop his head, and snowy symbols on his face. Circa 1940s, carved from cottonwood, with paint, string, yarn and feathers, 4 ¼ inches tall.
