A fine carving of Saint Francis, by George T. Lopez (1900 - 1993), renowned santero from Cordova, New Mexico, were there have been generations of Santeros and Santeras who carve simple, unpainted pine or aspen statues of saints.

This bulto (wood carving) carving represents Saint Francis, patron saint of animals and of nature. Stories abound of Francis communicating with animals and birds as he traveled the countryside as an itinerant preacher in the early 13th Century. This carving is circa mid-20th Century, aspen wood, 10 inches tall, has the honey-golden patina of age, and some water damage on its back and feet.
