Bat Mask from Guerrero Mexico
A human face appears in the body of a bat on this colorfully painted mask, typical of those depicting animals and hybrid beings in a blending of the native Nahua and Spanish Colonial cultures of Guerrero, Mexico. Similar to the well-known wooden carved masks, the use of painted copper, tin, or other recycled metals, was employed by craftsmen circa 1960-1980. Made of sheet metal, oil-based paint, and a hand made chain for display, 8 x 9 x 1 ½ inches, chain is 12 inches long.
