About Me
Originally from the Midwest (Illinois and Iowa), I moved to Boston in my early 20s and attended Massachusetts College of Art, earning a BFA in Painting in 1986. I moved to Taos, New Mexico in 2002.
The landscape in Northern New Mexico is my muse. I find myself focused on the smaller inhabitants of this landscape—plants and insects—for use as subjects for studies of light and color.
I make numerous drawings with charcoal and chalk to get an understanding of what lies beneath the colorful surfaces and then paint my “subjects” in oil on cradleboard. Rendering very small objects on a larger scale reveals hidden details of line and color that I find fascinating and beautiful. By enlarging these forms I can move toward expressing them in an abstract way.
I work with charcoal (in black and white) to reduce and simplify figures, focusing on composition. Adding color (with oil paint, or charcoal and pastel) I attempt to share my admiration of the profound beauty in nature, often found in creatures and creations we do not usually associate as being described in such a way.
I have shown my work at the Harvard University Art Museums, Massachusetts College of Art, The Piano Factory in Boston, MA, and in independent group shows at the Cyclorama in Boston. In Taos, I have participated in many group shows including The Taos Open, the annual Millicent Rogers Museum Miniatures Show, and the Hearts and Stars Benefit at Wilder Nightingale Fine Arts. I am owner/partner with Robert Cafazzo of Two Graces Plaza Gallery in Ranchos de Taos, NM since 2003, and we have shown our work almost annually in our space.
I have been in month-long residencies at the Vermont Studio School in 1989 and 1992.
My work can be found in the private collections of: Brian Snyder and Diane Schneeberger, Robert Dean Stockwell, Christine Magliocchi, Sarah Hinckley, Ian and Karin Hossack, Alice Van Buren, and David and Maureen Rubino
